HTC S740 Review
The HTC S740 is a part of HTC’s “S” series of mobile devices, but this particular smartphone seems to be more related to the HTC Touch family of PDA phones. It’s candy bar design and sleek black shell looks more like the Diamond or the Pro, but this smartphone has more than enough charm that’s all its own. Its measurements come in at 116.3 mm x 43.4 mm x 16.6 mm (4.58 in x 1.71 in x 0.65 in) with a weight of 140 grams (4.94 ounces) with battery. It also has a 3.2 megapixel camera with auto focus. It has an auto slide out 4 row QWERTY keypad with a 4 way navigation control with a center button.
The HTC S740 operates on Quad band GSM frequencies, and can transmit data across GPRS and EDGE enabled networks.
• HSDPA/WCDMA Europe: 900/2100 MHz Up to 384 kbps up-link and 7.2 Mbps down-link speeds
• Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
It also has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (802.11 b and g). It also has USB support and of course a microSD slot for easy connectivity. It has GPS and Assisted GPS (A-GPS) capabilities built in. “Assisted” means that location is captured through cell towers rather than satellites. Additional maps can be downloaded through third party applications as well, such as Google Maps. The S740 comes with 256 MB of RAM and 256 MB of ROM which is expanded with microSD cards. It runs off of a Qualcomm MSM7225, 528MHz processor.
The TFT LCD display is 2.4 inches with 320 x 240 pixels of resolution. It can display over 65,000 colors. Multimedia files can be played through the built in Windows Media Player. For audio, the S740 can playback AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, QCP, MP3, WMA and WAV files. These file types can be played as media for your enjoyment or as ringtones too. The S740 can play FM radio as well. It has a built in microphone, speakerphone and is capable of voice dialing. You can make voice memos as well through the S740’s built in microphone. The S740 is reported to have a talk time of up to 6.33 hours and a standby time of up to 400 hours.
The S740 is a Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard device and comes with a document viewer for your Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents. There is also a PDF reader as well. There is support for many of the popular HTML email clients as well as Outlook. This includes Direct Push email support as well. There are messaging features as well such as SMS and MMS (Multimedia Messaging) and instant messaging. Messaging is easy with the QWERTY and combined with T9 IME text entry.
There are also many third party applications available for free or paid download. The S740 is a beautiful piece of equipment. But it’s not all looks; it has all of the functionality of a small PC. With PIM, productivity and multimedia features added to its large connectivity abilities and built in GPS makes this a smartphone that stands well above the rest.
