The Motorola Q9m is the successor to the original Q. It measures 4.61 inches high by 2.56 inches wide by 0.47 inches in depth and weighs 4.76 ounces, this smartphone is not even an inch thick! It has a 2.4 inch TFT LCD screen with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. It can display over 65,000 colors. The Q9m has the usual soft keys and launcher buttons, as well as a five way navigational pad, with a center select key. Below that is its 4 row QWERTY keyboard. On the back is the 1.3 megapixel camera with a zoom, a flash, and video-recording capabilities.

The Motorola Q9m is powered by a 312 MHz Intel XScale PXA27x processor. It comes with 64 MB of built in flash memory, which is expandable by the Q9m’s miniSD slot. The battery has a rated talk time of 4.5 hours and a standby time of up to 8.8 days.

The Q9m can work over Dual Band CDMA 850 and 1900 frequencies. It can transmit data over 1xEV-DO capable networks (CDMA 3G). It also supports Bluetooth as well as many different profiles for added Bluetooth functionality including HSP, HFP 1.5, DUN, FTP, OPP, A2DP, AVRC, HID, PAN, BIP, SYNC and PBA. The Q9m also comes with a built in Assisted GPS (A-GPS).

The Motorola Q9m runs Windows Mobile 6, so you get all of the functionality that comes with this mobile operating system. That includes real-time e-mail delivery and automatic synchronization with Outlook. The Q9m also has the ability to work with other types of email accounts including POP3 and IMAP html clients such as Gmail and Yahoo. The most popular instant messaging clients are also accessible through the Q9m including MSN. The Q9m also supports normal SMS and MMS messaging.

For documents and general productivity, the Q9m includes the Dataviz’s Documents to Go suite of Office products. Documents to Go gives you the ability to view, edit and create Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents. It also has the power to display PDF files. Now you won't have to leave your work at home when you have other places to go. You can even compress them to save space. The Q9m comes with a built in ZIP manager.

Other personal information management tools on the Motorola Q9m include all of the Personal Information Management tools that you would expect from a device of this type. Calendar, tasks, notepad, voice recorder, calculator, Advanced Speech Recognition, etc., they are all there plus more.

The built in mobile version of Windows Media Player is capable of playing back iMelody, MIDI, MP3, AAC, WAV, WMA, WAX, QCELP and M4P audio formats. As far as video, it supports H.263, MPEG-4, GSM-AMR, AAC and WMV formats. It supports polyphonic and MP3 ringtones.

The Q9m offers much to those looking to have a more basic smart phone that has a lot of different functional capabilities. Its media functions get a lot of attention, but its productivity and PIM features are all just as well rounded as any other smartphone.
