Sony Ericsson G900 Review

Sony Ericsson G900 Review

The G900 is a smartphone device from the good people over at Sony Ericsson. The looks of this phone are a little unorthodox for the smartphone genre. It looks more like a traditional mobile phone than it does a smartphone. It seems that this phone was made more for people that use a phone for talking than it was for smartphone users. But that isn’t to say that this isn’t a fully functional smartphone, because it certainly is one.

The phone is mostly black with a little bit of silver. It has a very simplistic minimalist look much like a non-descript mobile phone that hides the fact that it’s a smartphone. Its dimensions come in at 106.0 x 49.0 x 13.0 mm or if you prefer, 4.2 x 1.9 x 0.5 inches. It weighs in at 99.0 grams or 3.5 oz making it much, much lighter than most smartphones. Its screen size is 2.4 inches and has a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels. It’s capable of displaying over 262,000 colors which is a large jump from the 64,000 that a lot of other phones try to tether you with. It also comes with autofocus and an image stabilizer function.

The G900 uses the Symbian OS and comes with 160 MB of internal memory and can be expanded with M2 (Sony Memory Stick Micro) cards.

The G900 has 2 built in cameras. The primary one is the 5 megapixel camera on the back (that’s right, 5) and the secondary camera is on the front. This one is used for self portraits and video calls. There is also a flash that can double as a flashlight, which is definitely a more than useful function.

Most of this phone's features can be used with just your fingers, the keypad, and its navigational wheel. But since it’s a touch screen device, there is also a stylus included. Also, there is handwriting recognition on this device so you can write with the stylus as well.

The G900 can also operate on 3G networks through GPRS UMTS bands, as well as through 2G through GSM bands. It also has Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g capabilities as well as a USB connection and Bluetooth.

Despites its smaller stature, the G900 packs in a lot of features that can be expected from any other smartphone. It can playback various file types including MP3, AAC and MPEG-4 through its built in media player. It can also use MP3 for ringtones and can play FM radio.

As far as messaging, the G900 can handle the normal SMS and MMS types of back and forth messaging. It can also handle email (normal and push email) as well as Instant Messaging. It also has a document reader and editor.

The G900 offers all of the things a normal mobile phone user would expect with the added abilities of a smartphone. But this device should be considered an entry level smartphone or for those that would like to use their phones more as actual phones with just enough smartphone so that they can do a little extra when not conversing.
